In collaboration with CCIFM – CCI France Malaysia and Malaysian Spanish Chamber of Commerce & Industry – La Cámara, Swiss Malaysian Chamber of Commerce organized our annual Economic Outlook for 2023 at Hilti Asia IT Services Sdn Bhd.
Ms. Pauline Goh, Vice Chairperson of SMCC welcomed the attendees to the event and invited the host, Mr. Lee Wai-Meng, to share about Hilti Asia IT Services Sdn Bhd. After the quick sharing from the host, Mr. Simon Fluck, Mr. Jordi Pol Ramon, and Mr. Michel Lozach represented the chambers to thank Mr. Lee and welcomed every participants.
Mr. Ralph Stamm, Deputy Head of Mission from the Embassy of Switzerland in Malaysia, Mr. Michel Cywinski, Economic Counsellor from the Embassy of France in Malaysia, and Ms. Inés Pérez-Durántez, Economic and Commercial Counsellor from the Embassy of Spain in Malaysia, presented some insights of the current economic situations of each country.
Dr. Anthony Dass, Group Chief Economist / Head of Research, Secondment to Economic Planning Unit (EPU) of Ambank Group, shed light on the economic outlook of Malaysia in 2023. Regarding the topic of “Can the Unity Government Steer Favorable Growth in 2023?”, Dr. Anthony shared some concerning issues on both external and domestic challenges such as the risk of global recession, slower global trade, worsening of financial conditions, the increase of costs of living, the costs of doing business, and more.
However, on a brighter note, Dr. Anthony shared the potential of the easing of inflation and the improvement of the consumer sentiments. Supply chains to improve as producers’ delivery times shortened for the first time since November 2019. Delivery times will ease up as materials shortages, port congestion and delivery issues continued to normalize. There will be a greater commitment from trading partners as Malaysia’s Prime Minister’s foreign visits have been positive. Malaysia to expect greater levels of cooperation and coordination.
After the sharing from Dr. Anthony and a short Q&A session, the attendees proceeded to enjoy some light refreshments and lunch provided by Hilti Asia IT Services. We would like to extend our gratitude to Hilti Asia IT Services Sdn Bhd for hosting the event, Dr. Anthony Dass for his sharing, and CCI France Malaysia as well as La Cámara for the great collaboration. SMCC hope to organize more inter-chamber events in future.
